What is Desolation?

Desolation is a game about the dangerous journey of crossing the Mexican American border. You play an 18 year old named Miguel who is trying to cross the Mexican-American border through the desert surrounding the Devil’s Highway during the weekend of Day of the Dead. The game is set in both a realistic and magical realistic environment which is populated by Aztec and some Native American due to the highway crossing sacred Native American land and to the Aztecs the north was considered or associated to the underworld.

Genre and Gameplay Style

Desolation is a 3D third person exploration game. Firewatch and Papo y Yo are some games that we’ve looked at for inspiration in terms of genre and gameplay style.

Look and Feel

We want to use a low poly art style similar to Firewatch. The reason for this is because we want to include art that represents Aztec culture.

We also want the player to feel disoriented when playing through the desert. The desert plays tricks on you, so in order to empathize that we’ll be using Non Euclidean Level Design which causes disorientation to the viewer similar to what you’ll find in the movie The Shining and the video game PT. By doing so, we can bring the player within a magical realistic environment using Aztec lore.
